Coding is everywhere. It is all around us. We depend on it to do almost everything these days. Every electronic machine we use and every thing we use it for depends on coding.  So let’s take a deeper look and ask the question: What is Coding?

At its most basic – coding is telling a computer what to do!

Have you ever wondered how computers work – why do they do what you want them to do? Well, it’s because they’ve been told to do exactly that. And the way we tell them is through coding. Coding is the way we format instructions that a computer understands and allows it to carry out the functions we want it to.

Every electronic  devices from laptops, desktops, phones, and tablets require code to operate. Every website you are on and every app you use can only operate because someone has written a code that makes it work.

Coding allows us to build programs, such as websites and apps. Coding also tells computers how to process data in better and faster ways. These codes need to be written and these coders are often known as computer programmers.

What is Coding?

So let’s imagine coding as a language – we use it to communicate a set of detailed instructions for a digital computer. Programmers learn the language and are able to use it to create a set of instructions for computers to follow.

Just like the languages we speak, there are a variety of programming languages, each of which serves a different purpose.

The most popular programming languages that you may have heard of are

C#

  • Game development
  • Desktop/web/mobile apps
  • VR
  • Cloud-based services

JavaScript

  • Web development
  • Game development
  • Mobile apps
  • Building web servers

JavaScript is the most used programming language in the world, used by 97.0% of websites.

Python

  • Back end development
  • App development
  • Conduct data analysis
  • Automate tasks

HTML

  • Web documents
  • Website development
  • Website maintenance
  • Hypertext links

CSS

  • Web documents
  • Website development
  • Website design

Java

  • E-commerce
  • Finance
  • App development
  • Android apps
  • Software development tools

SQL

  • Database management
  • Sales reports
  • Business management

If you are interested in learning coding ask your school about coding camps. There are many computer and technology and STEM summer camps for kids and teenagers that run throughout the summer.

And keep an eye on the whichcollege.ie news on our blog which will post news of upcoming camps.

Whichcollege.ie is a national database of universities, colleges, institutes and providers of third level, CAO and PLC courses in Ireland. We operate a national search database of courses and colleges.
