Congratulations,. You’ve got your CAO points & you’ve accepted your place and now you’re starting to think about what college will be like. A new exciting chapter is beginning in your life. Adventure awaits!

Although many of you will be excited about this new stage, it’s normal to be mindful of what this new experience will bring. And many will be asking themselves the question  What Will My First Week in College Be Like? The first few days on campus can feel overwhelming, so here at whichcollege.ie we thought we’d help you to get ready by taking a look at what to expect and how to make the most of your first week of college.


What Will My First Week in College Be Like?



Universities typically plan extensive orientation schedules to welcome new students. This usually involves information sessions, campus tours, social activities and more. Attend as many of these events as possible – they help you adjust and meet fellow freshers! and help build your confidence in the first week.


Use the first week to familiarize yourself with the campus layout. Figure out where your classes are located, where to eat, the library and study spaces, recreational facilities and other key places you’ll need to know.

Get organised

Get your student ID card, set up your student email account and get your timetable sorted and get your books in place early on to set yourself in good stead.

Join In

Joining clubs and societies is a fantastic opportunity for students to meet like-minded people, build friendships, and explore shared interests.

Whether you want to play sports, engage in activism, or geek out over anime, there are diverse student organizations catering to virtually every hobby and passion. You’re sure to find your niche.

New Schedule

The first week means transitioning into a whole new schedule. You’ll want to organize and plan for things like class times, study sessions, activities, holidays and various events. Making use of tools like planners or apps can help stay on track.

Meeting New People

One of the best parts of college – meeting new people! Whether through orientation or classes, use the first week to put yourself out there. Remember that this is a new experience for every other first year so go ahead and say ‘Hi’ – you never know; you might meet your best friend for life!

The first week of college is full of new experiences. While it can be nerve-wracking, enter with an open mind. Stay organized, get involved on campus, make friends and enjoy this new freedom and chapter of your life.
