What is Personal Training?

A Personal Trainer works with clients one-on-one to create personalized fitness programs that will motivate and guide them to achieve their desired goals.

Personal Trainers have the skills and knowledge in proper nutrition and fitness to help their clients lose weight, gain muscle and build fitness levels to increase the health of their clients. A Personal Trainer’s clients will be taught how to exercise properly with good form and will have specific plans for their specific goals. They will instruct and advise clients on how to use a range of fitness machines, classes, or weights to get the most out of their workouts. Goals may include muscular endurance, strengthening cardiovascular capabilities, or even increasing a client’s physical flexibility.

Universities and colleges in Ireland are offering Personal Training courses in the following subject areas:

Studying Personal Training in college

Many full-time Personal Training courses run anywhere from 1 year to 4 years depending on the course and modules selected. There are also part-time courses and night courses available so you can be sure to fit in your studies no matter what your schedule is like.

Training can take place indoors and you can expect to work with a variety of exercise equipment, including free weights or nautilus machines, cardio machines like Stairmasters or treadmills. Trainers may also be expected to teach or coach their clients through floor work, including stretching and toning. You can also train outdoors if the weather permits and make use of parks and fields nearby for some outdoor aerobics or cardio warm-ups.

Working hours will depend on whether you are employed by a company with set business hours or if you are self-employed. Personal trainers need to be flexible to meet the needs of their clients, so you will likely work in the evenings, early mornings, and weekends.
