GMIT  is offering a series of free online Leaving Certificate History revision sessions in April.

Dr Yvonne McDermott will host a session on Friday, 1 April, 2022 from 2 to 4pm titled “United States and the Wider World (1945-1999) while Dr Fiona White will host a session on “Politics and Society in Northern Ireland (1949-1993)” on Friday, 8 April, 3 to 5pm. The American topic is covered in many schools and the Norther Ireland topic will be a compulsory question in the documents-based section of the LC subject.

Both Dr White and Dr McDermott are history lecturers on the BA (Hons) in History & Geography which is delivered in the Department of Environmental Humanities and Social Sciences, which is part of GMIT’s new School of Health Science, Wellbeing & Society. “This is an excellent opportunity for students to revisit key topics they have studied over the last two years. These sessions will help you to structure your revision and will provide some tips on approaching exam questions,” says Dr McDermott.  “Aspects of the American topics that will be covered include Dr Martin Luther King and the Civil Rights movement, in addition to the Cold War.”

Dr White says: “We are pleased to have this opportunity to continue with delivering our Leaving Certificate history revision sessions, especially to this group of students whose schooling has been so disrupted in the last two years. The revision course will include a chronological examination of politics and society in Northern Ireland 1949-1993, from the Anti-Partition League until the Downing Street Declaration in 1993. Key concepts, key personalities, and potential exam questions will also be examined.”
