Night Time Degree for Adults BA Local Studies



NUI Maynooth offer this upcoming Night Time Degree BA Local Studies course.

The BA in Local Studies is specifically designed for adult students who are interested in pursuing a part-time evening degree in the Arts/Humanities. This flexible degree has been developed for people who are busy with work, family and daily life. If you are interested in history, politics, the environment, development, adult education, society and culture, and you have two free evenings a week, then you should consider this wide-ranging degree.

8 of the University’s academic departments come together to create the only degree of its kind in Ireland. If you are curious about how people interacted with their environment in the past and how this impacted on their culture and identity in ways that are still felt today, then the BA in Local Studies should be of interest to you.

Students will have the opportunity to learn together through our Common Modules where history, geography, adult education, sociology and anthropology bring their unique disciplinary insights to bear on culture, society, landscape, politics and more. This unique adult focused degree provides students with the study skills and student supports that allows them to complete their studies at their own pace.

Course Duration2 x 12 week semesters over the academic year Sept-Dec. and Feb-May. Full Degree Cycle 4.5 years. Students may avail of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) up to a maximum of 60ECTS.
Course TimeTuesday and Wednesday evenings 6.15-10.00. This is a modular degree. Typically a module is delivered in a small group setting (15-25 students). There is a scheduled break of 25 mins between modules. Students must attend both nights of their first semester Sept. - Dec. but can choose how many modules and how many nights they wish to attend from the beginning of their second semester.
Course FeePay per 5 credit module cost €410.
Entry RequirementsAs this is a part-time degree, the minimum mature applicant age is 21 years of age on Jan. 1 in the year of application. Admission is based on your application and/or interview. Eligible applicants will be invited for interview.
Carear PathThe BA Local Studies gives you the chance to develop research and writing skills to the highest level. The critical thinking faculties of analysis and interpretation of information and the ability to communicate the result in a succinct and accurate manner is an invaluable and much sought-after skill in many areas of employment. In some cases students from the Local Studies degree have published their research. Others have used their newly acquired knowledge and skills within higher education, secondary teaching and the tourism, hospitality and leisure industries. Some graduates decide they would like to proceed into postgraduate study in fields of interest such as history, geography, archaeology and folklore.
