What to Expect After You Submit Your CAO

12th January 2026
Est. Reading: 2 minutes

Submitting your CAO application can feel like a huge weight lifted  but it’s not the end of the process. Once you’ve clicked “submit,” there are still several important steps ahead. Knowing what to expect can help reduce stress and keep you on track.

You Can Still Make Changes (for Now)

After submitting your CAO, you’ll receive a Statement of Application Record. This is your chance to check that everything is correct.

Up to 1 July, you can:

  • Change the order of your course choices

  • Add or remove courses

  • Update course details

This period is often called the “Change of Mind” window, and it’s designed to give students flexibility as they gather more information or attend open days.

Keep an Eye on Key Dates

Once the Change of Mind deadline passes, the focus shifts to offers and results. Important dates to watch include:

  • Leaving Cert results day (TBC - usually August)

  • Round One CAO offers

  • Subsequent offer rounds

Missing a deadline can cost you a place, so it’s vital to check your CAO account and email regularly.

How CAO Offers Actually Work

CAO offers are based on:

  • Your Leaving Cert results

  • The order of your course choices

  • The number of places available

You’ll receive one offer per round - the highest-ranked course on your list for which you meet the points and requirements. If you don’t get your first choice in Round One, you may receive it in a later round if points drop.

Accepting or Declining an Offer

When you receive an offer, you’ll have a limited time to respond.

  • If you accept, you secure your place and may still be offered a higher-choice course in a later round.

  • If you decline, that offer is gone but you may still receive another offer if eligible.

Always read the instructions carefully before making a decision.

What If You Don’t Get an Offer?

Not receiving an offer in Round One can be disappointing, but it doesn’t mean your options are gone.

You can:

  • Receive offers in later rounds

  • Apply for available places through the CAO

  • Consider PLCs, apprenticeships or other pathways

Many students reach their chosen career through a less direct route.

Try Not to Panic... Points Can Change

CAO points depend on supply and demand, not course quality. A course with high points one year may drop the next, and vice versa. Focus on your preferences rather than trying to predict outcomes.

Preparing for College Once You Accept

After accepting an offer, colleges will contact you directly with:

  • Registration details

  • Orientation information

  • Start dates and requirements

This is a good time to start thinking about accommodation, budgeting, and settling into college life.

Submitting your CAO is a major milestone, but it’s just one step in the journey. Stay organised, keep your options open, and remember there are many ways to reach your goals.
