Every year, students across Ireland take a brave leap into college, even when they’re unsure, anxious, or convinced they’re “not the academic type.” These stories remind us that courage comes in all shapes and everyone starts somewhere.

“I Thought I Wasn’t Smart Enough…”

Emma left school early and spent years working in retail before returning to education through a PLC course.

“I used to think college wasn’t for people like me,” she said. “But my tutor told me something I’ll never forget — ‘You don’t need confidence to start. It comes after.’ She was right.”

Emma completed a Level 5 course, progressed to a degree, and is now working in social care.

“I Was the First in My Family to Go to College”

For Ahmed, starting college felt like entering a different world.

“I didn’t know the system. I didn’t know what to expect. But every question I asked, someone was willing to help. You don’t need to have all the answers — just the willingness to try.”

Now in third year of Engineering, he mentors new students who feel the same way he once did.

“I Changed Careers at 32”

Sarah had a stable job but felt unfulfilled. A short evening course sparked something in her.

“It reminded me that learning isn’t just for teenagers — it’s for anyone who wants to grow.”

She now works in digital marketing after completing a part-time higher diploma.

Courage Looks Different for Everyone

Starting college isn’t always easy, but each student’s story shows that bravery is about taking the next step despite the fear.

If they can do it, so can you.
