Running this week October 11-17 University College Cork is hosting UCC Community Week.

The week long programme (October 11-17) of free public and community events takes place online, across Cork and internationally. A number of keynote talks, tours, exhibitions and demonstrations will take place throughout the week, many held in partnership with community organisations.  

The week will include a singathon with the elderly community in the Aula Maxima, a local gardening workshop, a talk by a spiritual elder and a sustainable innovation workshop are among over 50 free events that will occur as part of University College Cork Community Week.

UCC Community Week

This year’s programme includes: 

  • Community Gardening workshop and a Neighbourhood Street Clean Up 
  • A free event organised in partnership with Cork’s Spirit of Mother Jones 2021 Festival. It features Native American spiritual elder Mona Polacca who has gained international recognition for her work as one of the International Council of 13 Indigenous Grandmothers – a group of spiritual elders, medicine women and wisdom keepers founded in 2004; 
  • The Glucksman Gallery will host a free talk with renowned Artist Tinka Bechert, who will discuss her work and artistic practice, including her exhibition at the Biennal in the UK; 
  • Down Syndrome Cork and Field of Dreams will be on campus with a pop-up pumpkin stall selling pumpkins grown from their 3 acre horticultural site in Curraheen; 
  • Singathon with the older community from in the Aula Maxima next Friday 
  • Dr Marie Murray, editor of the MindYourSelf Series of books from Cork University Press will interview author and Organisational Psychologist Dr Seán Ruth, about his book Personal Struggles; 
  • The Lord Mayor of Cork, Colm Kelleher will open an event with students from the School of Biological, Earth and Environmental Sciences and Green Spaces for Health, who collaborated to conduct a Tree Audit in the local community; 
  • A Dingle Hub Sustainable Innovation Workshop supporting the roll-out of sensor technology through the Farm Ambassador Project, a pilot which will engage with thirty farms in Corca Dhuibhne/Dingle Peninsula.

An annual event, this year’s focus is on the theme of Care, Recovery and Resilience. 

UCC’s President Professor John O’Halloran stated, 

“The strength of a university is with its community and this week celebrates our engagement with our local, national and international communities. We hope the public attends one of the many free events during this week long programme.” 

UCC Students Union President, Asha Woodhouse commented,  

“This year students have organised a number of events especially for the local neighbours living near UCC. These include a Community Gardening workshop and a Neighbourhood Street Clean Up. We are celebrating the positive things that students do together with our local community”.
