The Irish Council for International Students (ICOS) is conducting a Speak Out Against Racism Survey.

The findings from ICOS’ International Student Report 2021 revealed that 40% of international students who participated in the research had either witnessed or experienced racism in Ireland with just 5% of those affected by racism reporting the incident.

This survey forms part of ICOS’ Speak Out Against Racism event to mark International Students Day 2022 and highlight racism in Ireland. The aim is to raise awareness about the scope and nature of racism suffered by many international students, and contribute to the wider debate on how we can combat racism as a society.

The Irish Council for International Students promotes the rights & voice of international students in Ireland.

“Racism is an issue that affects many international students studying in Ireland, as well as staff in colleges. It is crucial that adequate supports for those who experience racism are provided, and that effective legislation to address the issue is introduced. That’s according to Executive Director of the Irish Council for International Students (ICOS), Laura Harmon, who spoke at ‘Speak Out Against Racism’, an event hosted by the organisation today (17.11.22).

“We are very concerned about the high instance of experiences of racism, most of which go unreported. ICOS is calling for the national action plan against racism to be prioritised by the government, as well as for more supports for colleges to develop strategies, training and clear reporting procedures for those who experience racism.’’
