MIC January Open Day

According to Cillian O’Callaghan, President of Mary Immaculate College Students’ UnionMIC Open Days give a taste of what is on offer across our two fantastic campuses. From our great range of programmes and on-campus facilities to the wide range of award-winning clubs and societies and supportive community, MIC has something for everyone. If you’ve been considering MIC for your final CAO or postgraduate study choices, the MIC Open Day is your chance to find out more.”

The event will include programme talks on MIC’s undergraduate degrees on offer at MIC Limerick and MIC Thurles, as well as talks on the College’s over 30 postgraduate programmes, offered from graduate diploma to doctoral level across the Faculty of Arts and Faculty of Education.

On the day, learn about MIC’s two new leading undergraduate degrees, with an initial student intake set for September 2024. The BA in English Language and Literature (MI009), the only programme of its kind currently offered in Ireland, and the BA in Drama and English (MI010), the only programme of its type offered in Munster. These innovative degrees are an exciting addition to MIC’s Faculty of Arts provision, which includes an established Bachelor of Arts (MI002) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (MI003).

According to Dr Brian Clancy, BA in English Language and Literature Programme Coordinator“We’re very excited to launch this BA in English Language and Literature. Our students will explore language in all its forms from the many different perspectives offered by both linguistics and literature. The aim of this bespoke degree is to create experts in text creation and analysis through an open, creative and critical approach to teaching and assessment.”

BA in Drama and English programme co-designer, Dr Deirdre Flynn says“This degree offers a great opportunity for students who love theatre and literature to combine their passions in an innovative and exciting new joint honours Bachelor of Arts (BA). Our students will engage with a wide variety of texts, including plays, fiction, graphic novels, film, and poetry and will learn how stories are brought from the page to the stage and screen.”

At postgraduate level, Faculty, and Research and Graduate School, members will be on hand to answer questions about MIC’s wide range of taught and research programmes. The College is a long-established provider of world-class postgraduate opportunities and focuses on student success and well-being and meeting real-world needs in diverse workplaces, both nationally and internationally. Students experience responsive research supervision and mentoring, funding and career development support schemes, and a first-class community of practice.

New additions to MIC’s postgraduate offering include the MA/M Sc in Environment, Society and Culture, and the MA in Climate, Justice and Sustainability.

Professor Paul Aplin, Head of MIC’s Department of Geography, said about the launch of the new programmes: “We are very proud of these new Master’s degrees. The MA in Climate, Justice and Sustainability programme is focused, modern and, we think, urgent; responding to the enormous challenges, and especially inequalities, the world faces in accommodating rapid climate change while meeting the needs of human societies. The MA/MSc in Environment, Society and Culture programme provides broader coverage of geographical themes around the society/environment interface, mirroring the integrated nature of this subject in the real world.”

Open Day attendees will also be able to learn about MIC’s range of scholarships and funding opportunities, such as undergraduate entrance scholarships, postgraduate scholarships, sports scholarships, and other awards and bursaries
