Young people interested in animation and creative careers will have an opportunity to explore the industry at IFI Careers in Animation, a special half-day event taking place on 21 October 2026 as part of the Irish Film Institute’s IFI Next Generation programme.
Designed for young people aged 15–19, the event will introduce attendees to the range of career opportunities available in animation, from creating characters and developing stories to the technical and creative skills involved in producing animated films.
With contributions from animators working in award-winning studios, special guests and Screen Ireland’s National Talent Academy for Animation, the programme will offer insights into the realities of working in the sector and the different routes into the industry.
Animation brings together artistic talent, storytelling, technology and collaboration. While many people associate the industry with animators and illustrators, it also offers opportunities in areas such as character design, storyboarding, modelling, visual development, production and technical animation.
Through panel discussions, workshops and a question-and-answer session, attendees will be able to hear directly from industry professionals, learn about the skills employers value and discover how education and training can help them prepare for a career in animation.
The event is particularly relevant to students considering college courses in animation, film, digital media or related creative subjects. It provides an opportunity to ask questions about entering the industry and gain a clearer understanding of the skills and qualifications that may support their ambitions.
IFI Next Generation aims to connect young people with film culture and the wider screen industries. Events such as IFI Careers in Animation help students explore professional possibilities, meet people working in the field and consider how their creative interests could develop into future careers.
For those who enjoy drawing, storytelling, digital design or filmmaking, learning more about animation can be a useful starting point when researching college options and career pathways.
