Social Studies - Advanced



This course is designed for those who wish to work with and on behalf of people who need help or support in accessing social and community services or information, or who require someone to speak or act on their behalf as an adviser or advocate. This support, or advocacy, is crucial in enabling people to successfully access services and entitlements.

The course is suited to participants who may have already achieved Level 5 or equivalent certification in related areas, or who have experience in the social care area and wish to develop their career opportunities.

Entry RequirementsQQI Level 5 or equivalent or Relevant experience in the voluntary/community sector or social services. Mature applicants welcome. All applicants interviewed. Applicants may be accepted without meeting formal entry requirements. Successful applicants are advised to find suitable work experience.
Carear PathCareer and Employment Opportunities Learners who successfully complete this course may find employment opportunities in the voluntary sector in areas such as youth advocacy, working with homeless people, with supportive housing organisations, community childcare agencies, family support centres and elder advocacy. Progression: Learners may progress to a related Level 7 and Level 8 Degree Programs in Universities and Institutes of Technology. Learners who successfully complete a QQI Level 6 Certificate may be able to use their results to progress to related Level 7 and Level 8 Degree Programmes in Irish Universities and Institutes of Technology. Third level progression opportunities for QQI learners are continually being developed and enhanced. Please visit www.qqi.ie or www.cao.ie for the most up to date information. Former learners have progressed to UCD, DIT, NUI Maynooth, IT Blanchardstown and other third level colleges to study degree programmes in Social Science, Social Care and Applied Social Studies as well as Journalism and Politics or to train as Gardai/Prison Officers. Learners may also choose to go directly into employment. Opportunities in the social care area is one that is currently expanding at the moment.
