Local history



This Certificate level course is offered by the Department of Modern History, NUI Maynooth. The course examines the ‘local dimension of Ireland’s past’.  The course aims to provide participants interested in local history with an opportunity to obtain formal training in the subject. This course sets out to provide students with a methodological approach to the research and writing of local history.  It is also considered for Recognition of Prior Learning for the BA Local Studies MH803

Course fee is €1250. An Easy Payment Plan is available upon registration.
Part time students who are on courses at levels 6 to 10 on the framework of qualifications may be eligible to for the Student Assistance Fund (SAF) to help with the associated costs of attending a university course such as Travel, Childcare, Utilities, Materials etc. You should first consult: SAF Guidelines to see if you qualify and then e-mail student.budget@mu.ie to make further enquiries.

Entry RequirementsParticipants need to be 21 years of age or over on 1st January of the year in which the course commences. As courses are delivered in keeping with adult education practice, participants will be expected to: be willing to engage with group activities and group learning; be willing to learn through dialogue and reflection on experience; have a level of literacy that is sufficient to complete the assessment requirements.
Carear PathThe Cert. in Local History is a standalone qualification. It carries 20 credits on the European Credit Transfer System. These credits can be used for Recognition of Prior Learning on the BA Local Studies (MH 803). Many students who complete the Cert. in Local History go on to study for the evening degree in Local Studies. This is the only interdisciplinary degree of its kind in Ireland combining the expertise of Ireland’s leading history department for the study of local history, with one of the most well regarded geography departments in the country. Students can study folk traditions, Gaelic Literature and Culture with modules from the Centre for Irish Cultural Heritage and Ancient Classics and deepen this knowledge with classes in Anthropology or Sociology.
